Ask about basis when inheriting property

If you receive an expensive brooch from your aunt or shares of stock from your father as an inheritance, be sure to ask the executor who handled the deceased's estate what the property was valued at on an estate tax return. This value becomes your basis and will be used to determine gain or loss when you sell the property.
