If I sell my house, is there any limit on the number of acres that can be part of the sale for purposes of the home sale exclusion?

No. The home sale exclusion, which allows gain on the sale of a principal residence to be tax free up to $250,000 ($500,000 on a joint return) if certain conditions are met, applies to the home and all the property it sits on as long as this property is adjacent to the home. There is no limit on acreage or outbuildings.

However, if you sell off some acreage and keep the home, this sale doesn't qualify for the home sale exclusion unless the home is also sold within two years. Then both transactions are treated as one for purposes of the home sale exclusion. If the transactions occur in two different years, the exclusion applies to offset the gain from the residence sale first and any remaining portion of the exclusion can then be applied to the gain from the land sale.
