When to get an appraisal

When you donate an item to charity valued at $500 or more, when you have a casualty loss to your home or other property, when you make a gift you think is worth no more than $12,000. Valuations from qualified appraisers are necessary to support certain transactions for tax purposes and avoid hefty IRS under- or overvaluation penalties.
