The IRS announced that it was using a new format for tax return transcripts to better protect taxpayer’s personal information (IR-2018-171, 8/22/18). Starting September 23, 2018, Get Transcript Online, Get Transcript by Mail, and the Transcript Delivery System for tax professionals will see the changes (including new line 5b on Form 4506-T and Form 4506T-EZ for a 10-digit Customer File Number created by the taxpayer or third parties, such as lenders, needing tax information). The following information will be provided on the new transcript:
There is no change in the process for students seeking income verification through Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), disaster victims seeking FEMA assistance, or businesses looking at their tax transcripts.
Items directly reducing income. Personal deductions such as for mortgage interest, state and local taxes, and charitable contributions are allowed only if deductions are itemized on Schedule A, but deductions such as for alimony, capital losses, moving expenses to a new job location, business losses, student loan interest, and IRA and Keogh deductions are deducted from gross income even if itemized deductions are not claimed.
