Homeowners who claimed the first-time homebuyer credit in 2008 are subject to an annual repayment of 1/15th of the credit until it has been fully repaid to Uncle Sam. The credit effectively was an interest-free loan.
The IRS has created the First-Time Homebuyer Credit Account Lookup to enable affected taxpayers to determine the total amount of the credit that was claimed and how much they’ve already repaid. To use the tool, you’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth, street address, and zip code.
