Free File Open until November 17

Taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $73,000 or less can use Free File to prepare and file their 2021 federal income tax return. Usually, Free File remains open until the extended due date…October 17, 2022, for 2021 returns. This year, the IRS is keeping it open until November 17, 2022 (IR-2022-179). For those with AGI over $73,000, Free Fillable Form from the IRS is an option to prepare returns and file them online for free.

Note: Taxpayers who have been victims of federal disasters and received more time to file their 2021 returns (e.g., victims of Hurricane Ian who have until February 15, 2023, to file their 2021 returns if they had obtained a filing extension) will only have access to Free File until November 17; it will not remain available through the extended due date of February 15, 2023.
